Replacing windows can involve plenty of dust. Fortunately, preparing your home before your window replacement contractor arrives will help contain the mess. Here are six tips to keep your living space clean during your project.

1. Protect Your Furnishings and Decor
Protect your furniture from dirt and dust by covering them with sheets or plastic covers. Take down pictures, mirrors and other decorative items from the wall. They can accidentally fall due to the vibrations created when removing the old windows and installing the new ones.
If possible, move furniture pieces and other items away from the windows to avoid damage from debris. It’s best to keep your belongings in another room during the installation.
2. Keep Doors Closed
Closing doors in rooms your contractor doesn’t need to access will help contain dust and debris in one place. It will also make it easier for the workers to clean the site after the window replacement.
3. Close Your Vents
Ideally, your HVAC system should be off during your project. It will help minimize airflow within your living space. However, if it’s uncomfortably cold or hot, you can close the vents in the rooms where your contractor will install new windows.
4. Cover Your Floors and Tub
Covering floors with drop cloths will protect them from dust and debris. Are you getting new bathroom windows? If so, place a cardboard in the bottom of your tub if workers need to step on it during the project.
5. Close Off the Site
If your project involves bay, bow or picture windows, you may need to close off the site. Some contractors conceal the room themselves before starting the job. However, if your installer’s service doesn’t include this step, you can hang plastic drop sheets around the room to prevent dust from reaching other areas of your home.
6. Keep Kids and Pets Away
All young children and pets must be away from the window replacement site. It’s crucial for minimizing the mess and avoiding accidents. Consider temporarily having your little ones or pets with a friend until the project is complete.
