Energy & Environmental Efficiency
Committed to Comfort, Energy Savings and Sustainability
It’s simple. You want windows and doors that will make your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, all the while keeping your utility bills down. Renewal by Andersen® replacement windows and doors do just that and help the environment at the same time.
At Renewal by Andersen® with its parent company, Andersen Corporation™, the long-standing and deeply held responsibility to energy conservation, and sustainable environmental stewardship begins in the raw material and manufacturing process. It ends when the final product realizes energy saving and environmentally sound benefits for the consumer.
Green Seal Certified
Renewal by Andersen® was the first window manufacturer to receive Green Seal certification for Environmental Stewardship. The Green Seal is a mark of environmentally responsible manufacturing and design. Green Seal certified products are subjected to rigorous scientific testing during which the entire life cycle of a product is scrutinized to accurately determine the impact it will have on the environment. The Green Seal is only awarded to products that demonstrate superior performance while simultaneously protecting the planet.
Consider the following:
- The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that windows can account for as much as 40% of the annual cost for heating and cooling a home.
- The average home requires more energy and releases more carbon emissions than the average automobile.
- Landfills are burdened by construction waste including poorly manufactured windows less than ten years old.
- Poor indoor air quality due to off-gassing, where toxins are released from building materials, is a growing health hazard in America.
Cut Your Energy Bills and Help Protect the Environment.
Renewal by Andersen® America’s first and Colorado’s only Green Seal Certified window.
Green Seal
The Mark of Environmental Responsibility
Green Seal is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to safeguarding the environment, and transforming the marketplace by promoting the manufacture, purchase, and use of environmentally responsible products and services.
By replacing inefficient windows and doors with Renewal by Andersen® windows and doors, energy cost and consumption, along with carbon emissions, is reduced. Renewal by Andersen® windows are guaranteed to maintain their temperature tolerability, airtight seals, and insulating properties thereby saving even more energy than the stringent ENERGY STAR™ criteria demand. In fact, Renewal by Andersen® windows, depending on glass selection, are from 41% to 70% more efficient in the summer and 35% to 45% more efficient in the winter than ordinary double pane glass windows.
Green Seal estimates that if all windows in the U.S. were as energy efficient as those made by Andersen® Windows, Americans would save up to 2.5 percent of the annual U.S. energy consumption—an estimated 200 gallons of oil for every household in the U.S.
In addition, the long life cycle of Renewal by Andersen® windows and doors means less energy, raw materials, and fuel are used to meet consumer demand and less landfill space required to handle inferior products that leave no option but replacement.
Renewal by Andersen® windows, comprised of 40% reclaimed wood fiber by weight, have also been identified by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) as containing the highest amount of certified recycled content of any window. And because they require no wood preservative or paint, they release no VOC off-gasses and are the only windows certified to meet the strictest SCS indoor air emission standards.
Finally, 98% of the raw materials used to manufacture Renewal by Andersen® windows and doors are used 100%. There is no unnecessary consumption of natural resources, and no environmentally harmful waste or pollution produced along the way. The facility where Renewal by Andersen® products are made is fully powered by a steam generating plant fueled with saw dust, a renewable resource and by product of the manufacturing process itself. The resulting ash created is then used by farmers to improve the quality of the soil in their fields. The Andersen® approach is truly sustainable.
FIBREX™: Green Fabrication
What about vinyl windows?
Vinyl windows are made of Polyvinylchloride, which is a plastic material used for window framing. It is inexpensive and durable. However, by itself vinyl windows are subject to thermal expansion, deterioration from ultraviolet light exposure, warping, bowing, and discoloration. To counter this, many vinyl windows come reinforced with metal bars or extra vinyl. This adds some strength to the window; however, reinforced vinyl window frames are very bulky, taking up large amounts of glass and ruining your view. In FIBREX™, however, the thermal plastic bonds with the wood fibers to create a composite material. By combining the two we get the strength and stability of wood with the ease of maintenance of vinyl. Since FIBREX™ is so strong, you have a more narrow window frame ,which allows for plenty of glass space and an amazing view.
Engineering Sustainable Solutions
FIBREX™, a revolutionary composite breakthrough in the window industry, is only available from Renewal by Andersen®. It is engineered to be durable, long lasting and low maintenance. Patented as a blend of thermoplastic polymer and wood fiber reclaimed directly from our manufacturing processes, FIBREX™ yields the strength and insulating value of wood with the low maintenance features of vinyl. It never requires painting and will not crack, pit, corrode or rot. FIBREX™ windows are the first windows in America to earn the coveted Green Seal.
Andersen Corporation™ not only became the first Green Seal™ certified window manufacturer in large part due to what their windows are made of, but also for the environmentally sustainable manner in which FIBREX™ is made.
The Making of Fibrex™
FIBREX™ is a composite, or custom engineered product combining reclaimed wood fiber and vinyl. Through an extrusion process, the two materials are bonded together to yield a lighter, stronger, and better performing product than the two materials on their own. The wood gives strength and thermal insulation qualities, and the thermal plastic allows for a maintenance free product. Each material builds on the other’s strengths of the other and offsets their limitations. As a result, FIBREX™ is guaranteed to outlast windows made of both vinyl and wood by themselves.
What is FIBREX™?
FIBREX™ is a composite material made exclusively by Andersen. It is a composed of wood fiber and thermal plastic. Because it combines the strength and classic look of wood with the maintenance-free qualities of thermal plastic, FIBREX™ combines the features and benefits of the two most popular types of window materials, wood and vinyl. FIBREX™ gives you a beautiful, long lasting option for the windows in your home.
-
Thermal Expansion
In both hot and cold weather, your windows and your house expand and shrink. The coefficient of thermal expansion, or CTE, measures how much shrinkage or expansion occurs. Different materials have different CTE’s.
A house made of wood, brick, or stucco has a low CTE. Vinyl windows have a much higher CTE. As a result, the house and vinyl windows would expand and shrink at different rates and the vinyl windows would tend to warp, distort and pull away from the house, leaving gaps or cracks and ultimately leading to the leakage of air, water, drafty rooms and foggy windows.
FIBREX™ has half the CTE of vinyl. It is closer to that of wood or brick. FIBREX™ windows expand and shrink with your house. No gapping or cracking occurs. Your windows stay airtight and clear.
-
Stiffness
Glass is heavy, especially when you’re dealing with today’s double-paned windows. Window frame materials must be strong to support all that weight.
Vinyl window frames without support lack dimensional stability and are not very stiff. They tend to bow or warp under the weight of the glass. That’s why they have larger frames, or are reinforced with rods of metal. Unfortunately these remedies don’t always work and they require big, bulky frames with less area remaining for actual glass. FIBREX™, nearly three times stiffer than vinyl, allows more glass, and more glass enhances the view.
FIBREX™ is also stable and rigid. Like FIBREX™ wood is stiff, yet it’s also unpredictable due to its natural tendency toward variation in grain, knots, pitch pockets, and moisture content.
-
Heat Deflection
Heat Deflection refers to how well a material can handle heat. At high temperatures, some window materials begin to distort and deform.
Studies show that the outside of your home can reach 175 degrees in the summer and vinyl begins to break down at 156 degrees. Eventually, vinyl windows just fall apart. That’s why they only come in white or off-white colors. When the lighter colors reflect heat, the temperature of the window doesn’t rise as far, or as fast.
FIBREX™ can withstand temperatures up to 221 degrees—which the surface of your house will probably never reach. FIBREX™ windows will last for many years. And you can get FIBREX™ windows in colors like Sandtone, Terratone, or Cocoa Bean.
-
Thermal Conductivity
Thermal conductivity measures the transference of heat through a material. Some materials, like metal, transfer massive amounts of heat. Aluminum is a good example. Its thermal conductivity rate is high. FIBREX™ hardly transfers any heat. Warm air stays inside during the winter, and hot air stays outside in the summer. Temperatures remain comfortable, energy consumption is reduced, and monetary savings enjoyed.
-
Water Absorption/Decay Resistance
While wood performs comparably to FIBREX™ in many areas, it has a glaring drawback: it absorbs water and rots. FIBREX™ does not.
Because water on wood encourages the growth of fungi, which breaks wood down, over time wood windows can lose from 10-50% of their total mass. Again, the windows literally fall apart. Every wood fiber in FIBREX™ is surrounded and coated with a thermoplastic polymer to provide 100% resistance to rot and decay. FIBREX™ is also warranted not to flake, rust, blister, crack, peel, or corrode. It will never deteriorate or disintegrate. FIBREX™ is also 100% resistant to termites.
The Benefits of Fibrex™
-
Insulation
Because of its dimensional stability and superior insulating properties, which yield an inherent resistance to the effects of cold and heat, air infiltration and thermal transference, FIBREX™ frames can significantly reduce heating and cooling costs and requirements.
-
Durability
FIBREX™ frames offer proven long-term durability. They are more than 2 times stronger and stiffer than vinyl. They are also resistant to warping, fading, denting, rotting, decay, and fungal growth. They’re warranted not to flake, blister, peel, pit, or corrode.
-
VOC Reduction
FIBREX™ frames reduce VOC emissions since no wood preservative treatment or painting is required. Since 1990, Andersen® has reduced its VOC emissions by 60%.
-
Form and Function
FIBREX™ frames offer improved functionality with flawless operation. They are versatile, easy to maintain, and come with specially formulated coatings to provide long-term resistance to U.V. degradation. In addition, modern manufacturing applications allow greater choice in design options, colors, styles, and finishes including wood interiors.
