Whether you are getting new double-hung windows or casements, you need to ensure that their trim complements the rest of your home’s interior. Also called molding pieces, trim is the material that covers joints between different surfaces and materials. You can usually see them around window and door casings.

Read on for tips on how to match your window trim with the rest of your home’s interior.
Consistency Is Key
Your humble abode will look more appealing if you choose trim of the same architectural style for all rooms. However, you may invest in more trim-wall paneling for formal rooms like living rooms. For bedrooms, you can have beautiful cornices installed. It’s alright to experiment with different trim styles but be sure not to go overboard to prevent the component from sticking out. Excessive use of trim can even be detrimental to your home’s value and appeal.
Trim Size Matters
When selecting a trim for your windows, consider the size of the room first. Doing so will create a sense of balance in your living space. There shouldn’t be a significant difference in the size of the baseboard and crown molding. No molding should be over six inches in rooms with 8-foot-high ceilings or standard ceiling height. Ideally, you want to go for trim between 3 1/2 and six inches in height.
If you have a higher ceiling, you should choose trim that is taller and deeper. Six inches is the minimum height for baseboard and crown molding in homes with extremely high ceilings. To make standard-sized doors appear larger, you can install wide casings. Another option is to get decorative treatments like pilasters along or pediments above the doors.
