Summer is a great time for doing home maintenance chores, like caring for your windows. In today’s post, replacement windows and sliding glass doors company Renewal by Andersen® of Denver shares window maintenance tips for summer.
Remove Dirt and Debris Now, Wash It Later
If your windows don’t need to be washed at the moment, keep them clean by removing dirt and debris from the window sill, as well as other areas. Use a clean paintbrush to remove most of it. Removing dirt and debris can help prevent problems, such as stuck or difficult to open sashes. In particular, dirt and grit on sliding window tracks can result in excess friction and grinding that can damage the window finishes. Removing dirt and debris from the windows can also help make future window cleaning easier as you won’t have to do much scrubbing.
Wash Your Windows from the Indoors
Many people clean their windows, along with their siding and French doors, by washing them off using a garden hose. But you can clean your windows in a safer and more thorough fashion by cleaning them from the indoors. Most of today’s windows feature sashes that facilitate easy cleaning: double-hung windows with tiltable sashes, sliding windows with removable sashes and casement windows with off-center hinges that allow full access to all sides. These features have made window cleaning so easy that Renewal by Andersen incorporated these features in our windows.
Replace Old Weatherstripping
Weatherstripping seals the gaps between window frame and sashes and prevents air leaks. They’re either made of rubber or metal, and can get worn out over the years. If your windows have rubber weatherstripping, you can simply order a few rolls of replacement weatherstripping online. They come with preinstalled adhesive strips, so all you need to do after removing the old weatherstripping is clean the installation surfaces, cut the new weatherstripping to size, peel the adhesive backing and install. Windows with metal weatherstripping will need to be replaced by a professional.
